The Malamute is part of the northern breeds and the working class within the AKC groups. Malamutes were used by the Indian tribe known as the Mahlemuts in western Alaska. These dogs were highly valued for their ability to pull very heavy loads across the severe arctic terrain. Malamutes make wonderful, intelligent companions. They are not, however, good watchdogs. Malamutes are very intelligent although sometimes difficult to train. We highly recommend that new Malamute owners plan to obedience train their new companion to ensure a lifetime of happiness -- for both parties!

The adult Malamute is a heavy boned dog with a deep chest. They are typically 23-25" at the shoulders and between 75-85 lb. Much larger Malamutes are not uncommon though. Their heads are wedge shaped with prick ears. Their eyes are brown (never blue) and they carry a plume-like tail over their backs. Common coat colors are grey/white, black/white, sable, and occasionally all white occurs.
